Hi.

A few months back, my boyfriend was driving (with myself as a passenger) into Edinburgh along the A71, we had just went through a red light at the set of lights at the Chesser junction. There was a few cars behind us.

About a week or so later he received a letter saying that he had been caught running a red light by 1.4 seconds and he was to pay a fine of £60 and was to hand in his licence to receive 3 points.
The letter also said that if he wanted to appeal then he could. He didn't appeal as he thought it was pointless. I, on the other hand, suggested he should appeal because as I've already mentioned there was quite a few cars behind us. Surely he was safer to go through the red light, than to brake and cause an accident.

Am I right?

Since then he has paid the fine and received the points.

If he has paid the fine and accepted the points then it is now academic.

However, when approaching the lights, even on green, you should really anticipate that they may change and be able to stop, even with vehicles following you.
